Ashtanga
Yoga Cary began her study of yoga in 1997 with a style known as Svaroopa Yoga developed by Rama Birch out of San Diego, where she was living at the time. Her teacher was Mitra Sarkhosh, whose loving and nurturing approach left an indelible impression on Cary. Svaroopa Yoga is a very slow form that focuses on letting go of deep layers of tension and stress. After about a year of this style of practice, Cary was ready to see what else was out there in the world of yoga. She was eventually led to the study of Ashtanga Yoga with her teacher Tim Miller. Cary began to study the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga with Tim in 1998. In 1999 she began working on intermediate series, and at the end of that year, she took her first trip to India to study with Tim’s teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson, Sharath Rangaswamy at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore. Cary spent three months studying at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore on her first trip and has returned twice to study for two and three months each. She has been authorized to teach Ashtanga Yoga by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson, Sharath, themselves. Cary has been teaching since 1999. She has taught in San Diego, at Back Bay Yoga Studio in Boston, Shiva Shala in New York City, and currently at Yoga Place in London.
